Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask before and after ordering. If yours is not here, email us and a person will answer it.

Before anything else. If you drink daily and heavily, stopping suddenly can be dangerous and in some cases life threatening. That is a medical situation and it needs a doctor, not a supplement. Kudzu is not a detox aid and will not make withdrawal safe. Please speak to a clinician first.

What it does

Will this make me stop wanting a drink?

No, and be careful with anything that says it will. The change people describe is one of timing rather than desire. The urge still arrives. It becomes easier not to act on it immediately, and over weeks that changes how much you actually drink.

How does kudzu work?

Kudzu root contains isoflavones, mainly puerarin, daidzin and daidzein. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, including specifically for heavy drinkers. Small human trials have given standardized kudzu extract to heavy drinkers and observed them in a natural drinking setting, reporting fewer drinks per session and slower drinking. Those studies were small and short and measured behaviour rather than long-term outcomes.

Is this a treatment for alcoholism?

No. It is a dietary supplement. It is not a treatment for alcohol use disorder or withdrawal, it is not a replacement for medical care, therapy or a support group, and it has not been evaluated by the FDA for any of those purposes. Plenty of people use it alongside real treatment, and that is not a contradiction.

Can I drink while taking it?

Yes. It is not a deterrent and it will not make you sick if you drink, unlike medications such as disulfiram. Several customers describe the opposite of avoidance: they notice each drink more, which is part of why they slow down.

How long before I notice anything?

Most people feel nothing in the first week, and that is the week most people quit. The most commonly reported first change, usually in week two, is a slightly longer gap between the cue and the pour. Weeks three and four are where leaving one unfinished starts to feel less like a fight. Some people report nothing at any point.

Dose and ingredients

What exactly is in it?
  • 3 g kudzu root extract (Pueraria lobata) per daily serving
  • Standardized to 40% isoflavones, roughly 1,200 mg of isoflavones
  • Acacia gum, a capsule flow agent, which is the only other ingredient
  • 20 daily servings per container, 120 capsules
Why six capsules? That seems like a lot.

Because the serving is 3 g of extract, and 3 g of anything does not fit into one or two capsules. Brands offering a one-capsule serving are giving you a fraction of the dose. We would rather be honest about the capsule count than quiet about the milligrams.

Why does standardization matter?

Kudzu extract on its own tells you nothing. Two capsules can hold the same weight of powder and differ many times over in actual isoflavone content, because the plant varies and extraction quality varies. Standardizing to 40% is the guarantee that every batch lands at the same strength, and 40% is the concentration used in the human research.

When and how do I take it?

Six capsules once a day with a full glass of water, most people in the morning. Not at the moment you want a drink, and taking more on a hard evening does not make it work harder. Take it every day, including days you are not planning to drink, because the point is the steady level rather than the single dose.

Is it habit forming?

Kudzu is not known to be habit forming and there is no withdrawal from stopping it. You can stop whenever you want.

What does it taste or smell like?

There is a faint earthy smell when the bottle is first opened, which is the root. The capsules are swallowed whole, so there is no taste.

Safety

Who should not take this?
  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition, because isoflavones are phytoestrogens
  • Anyone with liver disease
  • Anyone taking methotrexate, tamoxifen, blood thinners, blood pressure medication or diabetes medication, without asking a doctor first
  • Anyone physically dependent on alcohol who is considering stopping suddenly. That needs medical supervision.

If you are unsure, the answer is to ask your doctor rather than to guess.

Does it interact with alcohol itself?

There is no known dangerous interaction at these amounts, but kudzu has been observed to affect how quickly alcohol reaches the bloodstream. Do not use that as a reason to test your limits, and do not drive on it.

Can I take it with other supplements?

Generally yes, but if you take anything hormonal, anything for blood pressure or blood sugar, or anything your doctor described as narrow-margin, check first.

Packs, orders and returns

Which pack should I choose?

One bottle is 20 days, which is shorter than the window in which most people notice anything. Running out at day 20 is the most common way someone never finds out whether it works for them. The 3-bottle pack is 60 days and includes the Small Shifts guide and free worldwide shipping. The 5-bottle pack is 100 days and adds a mystery extra.

How does the subscription work?

Subscribe and save takes 20% off, and it is the option selected by default. Your chosen pack is delivered and billed once a month at the discounted price, starting today, and it continues until you cancel.

There is no minimum term and no cancellation fee. You can cancel, pause, or change the delivery frequency at any time from your customer account or by emailing us, and we will action it the same working day.

If you would rather not have a recurring order, choose One-time purchase on the product page instead. That is a single charge and nothing will ever rebill.

A monthly delivery seems frequent for a 60 or 100 day pack.

It can be, and you should set the frequency to match how you actually take it. A single bottle is 20 days, so monthly suits the 1-bottle subscription well. If you are subscribing to the 3 or 5 bottle pack, stretch the interval or you will build up more than you need. Email us and we will set it to whatever suits you.

What is the guarantee?

You have 30 days from delivery. Take all 20 servings, finish the bottle completely, and if nothing about your evenings changed, tell us and we refund you in full. You do not return an unopened box and you do not explain yourself. Most people need more than 20 days to know, which is why the guarantee is built this way rather than around a sealed-product return window.

When will it arrive?

Orders are dispatched within one business day. Delivery is typically 7 to 14 business days with tracking sent by email. Track your order here.

Is the packaging discreet?

Yes. Nothing on the outside of the parcel names the product or what it is for.

What is shipping protection?

An optional $5 charge per order that covers loss, theft or damage in transit. You can untick it at checkout. Details here.

Can I change or cancel my order?

Orders are processed within one business day. Email us as soon as possible and if the parcel has not yet been dispatched we will change or cancel it at no charge.
